NewYearNewSmile

As December brings the old year to a close, it’s a great time to set goals for the year to come. This might include a major life change, such as a new job—or even a new romance! If one of these items is on your list for 2019, a smile makeover may be just the thing to help you get there.

Having a great smile can give your self-confidence a real boost. It can also affect how you are perceived by others. According to a survey by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, 99.7% of adults believe a smile is an important social asset and 96% believe an attractive smile makes a person more appealing to members of the opposite sex. At the same time, three quarters of adults feel that an unattractive smile can hurt a person’s chances for career success.

If you aren’t pleased with your smile and want a new look, we can help you figure out which cosmetic dental treatments could be right for you. The answer might be something simple—like an overall brightening of the smile with professional teeth whitening, or fixing a small crack or chip in a single tooth with cosmetic tooth bonding. If you’re unhappy with worn-down or crooked teeth, dental veneers or orthodontic treatment might be the way to go. In fact, many adults find that orthodontic treatment with clear aligners is a great way to get a beautiful, straight smile without drawing attention to the fact that a makeover is in progress.

Of course, it’s not only important for your smile to look good but also for your whole mouth to stay healthy. So if you are experiencing any tooth pain, unusual mouth sores or gum problems, it’s time for you to come in for an exam. And if it’s been a while since you’ve had a dental checkup and professional teeth cleaning, why not make an appointment for early in the year? Don’t start the new year with last year’s dental problems!

Porcelain VeneersFind out if You Could Be the Ideal Candidate for This Popular Cosmetic Restoration.

It’s amazing the many ways in which cosmetic dentistry can improve and enhance the appearance of your smile. In fact, more and more people are turning to a cosmetic restoration known as a dental veneer to hide common smile imperfections. Our Woodbridge, VA, cosmetic dentist, Dr. Sowmya Punaji of Legacy Dental Care, is an expert in the field and readily available to improve your smile as soon as possible! Read below to learn more about dental veneers and what makes someone an ideal candidate for the treatment.

Tell Me About Dental Veneers

Veneers are very thin porcelain restorations that are adhered to the front surface of one or more teeth to alter and enhance the shape, size, or color of your smile. While most people get a full set of veneers, this restoration can also be placed on a single flawed tooth.

Just like fake fingernails can cosmetically improve the appearance of your nails and hands, veneers can do the same for both a single tooth and your whole smile. After all, having a beautiful smile can certainly provide major aesthetic benefits and boost your self-esteem. You may be ideal for veneers if you want to cover,

  • Stains and discolorations
  • Chips, cracks, fractures, and breaks
  • Spaces between teeth
  • Misshapen or asymmetrical teeth
  • Worn-down teeth
  • Crooked or twisted teeth

If there is a cosmetic flaw that you want to hide, then chances are good that dental veneers can do it!

Good Candidates for Dental Veneers

If you want a smile that is whiter, straighter, or more symmetrical, then chances are good that veneers can help. Before getting veneers, our Woodbridge, VA, dentist will need to examine your smile to determine two things:

  1. That your smile is healthy enough for cosmetic dentistry
  2. That the problems you want to treat can be addressed with dental veneers

It’s also important to know that in order to get veneers, we will need to shave off a very small amount of enamel from the front of your teeth to make room for them. While this shouldn’t cause any discomfort, it's important to note that removing enamel is permanent. This means that your veneers are a lifelong restoration and can’t be reversed.

SpiceUpYourTeeth

As a member of the best-selling pop group Spice Girls, Mel C (AKA Sporty Spice) enjoyed her share of musical superstardom. At the band’s peak in the Nineties, the young singer’s signature look featured baggy sweatpants, an assortment of tattoos, a nose stud and a gold-capped incisor, front and center in her mouth. Today, Melanie Chisholm is still singing — but now she’s a mom, an amateur triathlete… and that gold tooth is just a memory. Not only that, her smile looks more evenly spaced and whiter than it did when she was referred to as the “tomboy” of the group.

What happened? In our view, it all boils down to changing tastes — plus a little bit of help from dental professionals. As the “wannabe” singer proves, there’s no single standard when it comes to making your teeth look their best. Your own look is unique to you — and your smile can reflect that individuality.

For example, crowns (caps) are substantial coverings that may be placed on teeth when they are being restored. They are available in three types: gold, all-porcelain, or porcelain-fused-to-metal. The latter two are tooth-colored, while the gold is — well, shiny like gold bling. Which one is right for you? In many cases, it’s your choice.

Likewise, dental veneers — wafer-thin shells that can correct cosmetic issues by covering the surface of your teeth — can be made in a variety of shades. Their hues may range from natural ivory to Hollywood white, and everything in between. What’s the best color for you? Only you can say.

Some people opt for a “smile makeover” that uses small irregularities in the spacing and color of teeth to create a more “natural” look. Other folks want a perfectly even, brilliant white smile that dazzles the eye. Still others are looking to match or restore the smile they once had — perhaps even re-creating a signature gap between the teeth. As long as there are no other dental issues involved, the choice is yours.

So if you’re unhappy with your smile — or if you feel it doesn’t reflect the person you “wannabe” — why not talk to us about a smile makeover? Just call our office to schedule a consultation. You can learn more about this topic in the Dear Doctor magazine articles “Beautiful Smiles by Design” and “The Impact of a Smile Makeover.”

BaseballsFranciscoLindorShinesasMrSmile

At the first-ever Players Weekend in August 2017, Major League Baseball players wore jerseys with their nicknames on the back. One player — Cleveland Indians shortstop, Francisco Lindor — picked the perfect moniker to express his cheerful, fun-loving nature: “Mr. Smile.” And Lindor gave fans plenty to smile about when he belted a 2-run homer into the stands while wearing his new jersey!

Lindor has explained that he believes smiling is an important part of connecting with fans and teammates alike: “I’ve never been a fan of the guy that makes a great play and then acts like he’s done it 10,000 times — smile, man! We’ve got to enjoy the game.”

We think Lindor is right: Smiling is a great way to generate good will. And it feels great too… as long as you have a smile that’s healthy, and that looks as good as you want it to. But what if you don’t? Here are some things we can do at the dental office to help you enjoy smiling again:

Routine Professional Cleanings & Exams. This is a great place to start on the road toward a healthy, beautiful smile. Even if you are conscientious about brushing and flossing at home, you won’t be able to remove all of the disease-causing dental plaque that can hide beneath the gum line, especially if it has hardened into tartar, but we can do it easily in the office. Then, after a thorough dental exam, we can identify any problems that may be affecting your ability to smile freely, such as tooth decay, gum disease, or cosmetic dental issues.

Cosmetic Dental Treatments. If your oral health is good but your smile is not as bright as you’d like it to be, we can discuss a number of cosmetic dental treatments that can help. These range from conservative procedures such as professional teeth whitening and bonding to more dramatic procedures like porcelain veneers or crowns.

Tooth Replacement. Many people hide their smiles because they are embarrassed by a gap from a missing tooth. That’s a shame, because there are several excellent tooth-replacement options in a variety of price ranges. These include partial and full dentures, bridgework, and dental implants. So don’t let a missing tooth stop you from being Mr. (or Ms.) Smile!

If you’d like more information about oral health or cosmetic dentistry, please contact us or schedule an appointment for a consultation. You can also learn more by reading the Dear Doctor magazine articles “Beautiful Smiles by Design” and “The Impact of a Smile Makeover.”

Isn’t it time you felt confident smiling around others? Veneers can help.veneers

Did you know that smiling can boost your mood? Of course, it’s a little difficult to smile if you are dealing with a smile that is less than ideal. If you have cracks, chips, stains and even gaps between your teeth you may not think there is a cosmetic treatment out there that could fix all these issues, but there is. Our Woodbridge, VA, cosmetic dentist Dr. Sowmya Punaji is here to tell you more about dental veneers.

What are dental veneers?

These thin, tooth-colored restorations are custom-made to look just like natural tooth enamel and are bonded to only the front of your teeth to improve the overall look of your smile while also hiding a myriad of cosmetic flaws. Unlike dental crowns, which require extensive tooth reshaping and preparation, dental veneers require little to no tooth preparation depending on the kind you get.

What problems can dental veneers hide?

These simple tooth-colored shells are pretty amazing because they are able to cover so many different flaws. If you have chips, cracks, fractures or discolorations in your teeth, getting dental veneers in Woodbridge, VA, could easily improve the shape and color of your smile. You can even get a straighter smile with veneers. Dealing with minor overlapping, twisted teeth or gaps between teeth? Don’t worry; dental veneers can often improve these dental issues, too.

How are dental veneers placed?

There are several steps involved to getting dental veneers:

  1. Consultation: We will need to make sure that your teeth are healthy, free of decay and that there is enough enamel to support veneers. We will also make sure that your treatment goals can be met with veneers.
  2. Preparation: After cleaning the teeth we will remove trace amounts of enamel from the front of your teeth to make room for the veneers. Then we will take impressions of your mouth for a dental lab to use to design your custom-fitted restorations.
  3. Placement: Once the lab has created your very own set of veneers, you will come in for a final fitting before we bond them permanently to your teeth.

Aren’t you ready to show off your beautiful smile thanks to dental veneers? If you are interested in taking the next steps to getting the smile you want then call Legacy Dental Care in Woodbridge, VA, today to schedule your no-risk consultation.
